Manufacturing process
A brief explanation of what supercritical CO₂ extraction is. We are regularly asked what this means, so here is a brief summary of the manufacturing process and its advantages.
Supercritical CO₂ is carbon dioxide (CO₂) that is placed under high pressure (~250 to 350 bar) and at moderate temperatures (~35 to 60°C). Under these conditions, CO₂ becomes a hybrid state, both liquid and gaseous, and can therefore penetrate plant material like a gas, but dissolve compounds like a liquid.
The different stages of the CBD oil extraction process
Step 1 – Preparing the hemp
The flowers and trichome-rich parts are dried and ground to homogenize the particle size.
They are then placed in a stainless steel extraction chamber.
Step 2 – Pressurization
Liquid CO₂ is injected into the high-pressure chamber.
When it reaches a supercritical state, CO₂ acts as a selective solvent: it dissolves cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, etc.), terpenes, and other lipophilic compounds present in the hemp plant.
Step 3 – Separation
The mixture of CO₂ and plant extracts passes through a separator where the pressure and temperature are lowered.
This returns the CO₂ to its gaseous state, naturally separating it from the extracted oil.
The CO₂ is then recovered and recycled for a new cycle (environmentally friendly process).
Step 4 – Refining/Filtration
The crude oil obtained sometimes contains waxes and lipids, so it is cold filtered to remove impurities.
The result is pure CBD oil, which can be refined by separating out the THC if a broad spectrum oil is desired.
CBD oil can be consumed in several ways depending on consumer preferences and habits.
Sublingually
This is the fastest and easiest way to consume CBD oil. Simply place a few drops under your tongue for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing to ensure rapid absorption through the mucous membranes in your mouth.
Orally
As effective as the sublingual method, the oral route involves adding a few drops of CBD oil to a drink, salad dressing, yogurt, cake batter, etc. Please note: CBD oil is not miscible in water, so it is advisable to mix it into a solid food to ensure it is absorbed.
Are there different types of CBD oil?
There are several types of CBD oil:
The isolate
This oil contains only isolated CBD, with no other associated molecules. It is recommended for specific needs requiring high daily CBD intake.
Broad spectrum
This oil contains several components, including CBD, terpenes, and flavonoids, but it is completely free of THC. It is recommended for people who want to enjoy the benefits of CBD oil while avoiding THC.
The full spectrum
This oil contains several molecules, including CBD and THC in quantities below 0.3% (the legal limit in France). It also contains certain plant substances naturally present in hemp, allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of this plant without any psychotropic effects. The synergies between these different molecules (CBD, THC, CBG, CBN) are called the "entourage effect." When cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are combined, they interact and offer optimal absorption, distribution, and effects to the consumer.
CBD, CBG, CBN: what's the difference?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychotropic molecule found in hemp. It has relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties and is effective against sleep disorders, anxiety, and inflammatory pain.
CBG (cannabigerol) is a molecule found in young hemp plants. Through biosynthesis, CBG gradually transforms into CBD or THC. With no psychotropic effects, CBG has properties similar to CBD: it relieves stress and anxiety, and also has muscle relaxant and antibacterial properties.
CBN (cannabinol) is obtained through the oxidation of THC. Like CBD and CBG, it is not psychoactive. It has relaxing properties, calms certain chronic pains, and stimulates appetite by reducing nausea.
It is entirely possible to take CBD, CBG, and CBN at the same time: this is the case when consuming full-spectrum CBD oil, for example.
